Super Hop (at last.....!)

Postby Tackleberry on Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:00 am

Okay boys and girls, this is the big one........

If all goes to plan I will be testing (and skirmishing) a prototype of the Super Hop Unit this weekend.

After more or less giving up on the idea I had a sudden flash of inspiration and the result is genius (if I do say so my self).

If I'm happy with the outcome I will begin putting it into production with in the next few weeks.

I'll post up prices and more specs when I've worked out the production costings, but here are a few details to keep you going:

1) Finished product will have it's own bespoke custom made body (stainless steel or high grade aluminium).

2) Unit will be easily adjustable through the ejection port.

3) It will be able to use all standard AEG hop rubbers (I'll be aiming for Madbull items as standard fit).

4) Bespoke barrel. Material yet to be confirmed.

5) Don't worry if you've blown a load of money on an expensive PDI barrel. The design is such that your existing barrel can be machined and modified to fit the Super Hop.

6) It will be sold as a complete drop in unit ready to go, or with your barrel modified to fit.

7) It will be available as an extra cost option on all new PTW's supplied by me.

8) And finally, this will render all other hop modifications obsolete.....period...!

This is what you all wanted and been waiting for, and it's coming soon.......... :D

Please post your interest here.

1) Does it work well?

2) Is it better than a modified hop-up?

3) Do you have to do the endless tinkering of BB/sleeve/bucking like with AEG?

4) Is it a serious and permanent inprovement, or just something to placate the "PTW hop-up poor design" crowd?

Sorry, Tony, not being facetious here, but enquiring minds want to know. And you can bet I'll be getting dozens of PMs asking if I think it's worth it.

Will it require the PTW barrel or modded PTW barrel or an AEG barrel or what?

Points 4, 5 & 6 cover this.

Also theres no point pissing around with normal AEG barrels. The outside diameter is too small and this would mean making sleave adaptors to fit, which would make it no cheaper to use one.

As point 5 states, you can have your original PTW barrel modified to fit.

Mac, to answer your questions:

1) As I said, it'll be tested this weekend. Production will based on the results of field testing.

2) As we both know once the original hop has been modified it can work every bit as well as the best regular AEG's. Where it will score is the simple fact that you don't have to drop out the mag every time you want to make an adjustment.

3) No more so than what we have at the moment. It's luck that I hit the nail on the head with the current hop mod, but experience (and theres a lot of that...!) tells me to the Madbull hop rubbers are pretty much the best (particularly the red one) and hence why that will be the standard fit.

We all have our favorite hop rubbers from our collective AEG days so it'll be no problem to swap them out and try.

4) I fully intend it to be. As I said in #2, the main reason is ease of adjustment. This is something I've been looking at since I got into PTW's 5 years ago.
Another advantage is the ease of maintainence. The original hop (as good as it is now with the mod) is still a massive pain in the ass to strip and lets face it a bit fiddly.
The Super Hop will be 2 M3 grub screws and the barrel is out ! This makes maintainence and even hop rubber swapping as simple as it can be.

You could argue the later part of your question is true (I've made it no secret that other than the fiddly adjustment I see nothing wrong with the stock unit), but I've always felt it could be better and easier to use.

As I said, this is the prototype and will be tested this weekend. If I'm happy with the results I will go ahead with it and give out more details along the way.

Will you continue to do the old mod? I need to find a hop unit and PDI inner barrel and send it your way.
